The world’s first insulated tumbler was created in 1946 by Detroit engineering duo Frank Cotter and G. Howlett Davis. Using the insulating properties of air, the two engineers created a permanently sealed, double-walled tumbler that kept cold drinks colder and hot drinks hotter longer than traditional drinkware. A simple combination of the last three letters of Cotter & Davis’ names began the Tervis brand.

The “original” Tervis tumbler was available in one size that was both tall and cylindrical. Then, in the early 1950s, the tumbler’s shape was redesigned and additional sizes were introduced. This growing line is also met with a sizable and expanding selection of original designs, licensed artwork, wraps, color, etc. It is good to know that the Tervis design was the predecessor of the many tumbler designs in the market today including that of Starbucks.
